EDUCATION, SPIRITUALITY AND SOCIAL WORK - THE PEOPLE ABOARD

“There is only one difference between Dream and Aim. Dream requires effortless sleep and Aim requires sleepless efforts. Sleep for Dreams and wake up for Aims.” – Swami Vivekananda

In 1904, a few heart-whole, sincere, and energetic men, who came to Malaya from Sri Lanka and  India,  were captured with the imagination and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda and decided to set up a reading room and a gathering place for like-minded people who understood the ideals of “seva” or “selfless service”. Swami Vivekananda’s belief in education when he said “ We want the education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet” was yet another reason why the Vivekananda schools were established.

Over more than 100 years of the Ashrama’s existence, here are the people who gave life to this organisation in the form of establishing opportunities for education, religious discourses, social and cultural services for all Hindus and others who saw the power of “seva”.

From  1937, the Ashrama appointed from its Committee a “Manager” to look after the  Schools. Later from 1974  decided that the position of the Manager of the schools was redundant and the care of each school was delegated to a Chairman so that greater concentration on education and co-curricular  activities could be achieved.
