THE ORGANISATION

The Ashrama ( better known as TVAKL ) began as a social service entity more than 100 years ago. It may be called an NGO by today’s standards. However, the organisation is administered by a Management Committee elected by its members and is registered as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act. The Management Committee is entrusted to own and operate not just the land on which the Ashrama building is located in Brickfields, but also the four schools of which three are Tamil schools. The forefathers had the vision to purchase the land in Brickfields in the early 1900.

The Ashrama building which was built in the early 1900s, with its unique architecture located in Brickfields, began as a Reading Room and in the past it served as a place where cultural activities and religious talks were held. However, in recent years the Ashrama Hall is also used as a temporary classroom for the schools and also for personal development classes like Yoga, music, dance and “thevaram” classes
