Our Purpose
The Philosophy
Swami Vivekananda was a man born beyond his time. His call for “education as a life-long process towards the fullest development of human personality, self-discovery, self-perfection, self-awareness and self-manifestation” has been the pivot, the vision and mission of The Vivekananda Ashrama Kuala Lumpur’s (TVAKL) existence.
Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy and teachings have been the driving force for more than one hundred years. TVAKL - a remarkably unique organisation managed by members who are motivated by passion for the cause and not by mammon. An organisation that has the dynamism and ability to change with the times accepting the modernity of the changing world while preserving the best of the past. Swami Vivekananda was one of the thinkers whose educational thoughts are unique, enriching and achievable. His Chicago address at the World Parliament of Religions in 1893 captured the imagination of religious thinkers. An inspiring spiritual and social leader, Swami Vivekananda has left an indelible mark in history with his philosophy. His teaching has enthused a whole generation of people throughout the world and still continues to be an inspiration.
Swami Vivekananda believed that education is the most critical investment a nation has to be involved in so that it is “life-long” and looking at today’s knowledge explosion, people should be kept engaged in learning throughout their lives. He also believed that through education, children learn their culture, which in turn moulds their behaviour. He understood that education, as an investment is the key to reducing poverty, eliminating gender inequality and a means to fostering peace.
Our Vision
In keeping with Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy, the Ashrama continues to advocate the view that holistic education of young people is a collective responsibility of society, and that every child must be given the right opportunities to develop in a beneficial way. This is in line with the Vedic philosophy “Service to man is service to God”.
Our Mission
The Ashrama’s vision and mission lies in the advancement of educational, spiritual and cultural activities, with the following objectives:
